Forced Marriage Protection Order

An area or law that requires sensitivity but also quick and decisive action.

Forced marriage is when one or both people do not, or cannot, consent to a marriage yet pressure is used to force them into the marriage. Such pressure can be in many forms including financial abuse, emotional blackmail, psychological pressure, physical abuse and sexual abuse. If you are or someone you know is at risk of a forced marriage we can assist by applying to the court for a Forced Marriage Protection Order (FMPO) against anyone who is perpetrating the abuse. FMPO’s contain various terms which the court considers appropriate to protect an individual from being forced into a marriage. Legal aid is available for victims to seek legal representation for an FMPO.
